I spent 5 weeks backpacking from Mumbai to McLeod Ganj. So many stories. I got swindled in a baby graveyard (for babies). I rode on the back of a motorcycle with two other guys in monsoon rains. I visited an elephant hotel. I drank tea with Tibetan monks. I saw the Taj Majal from the river bed behind it. I drank “special tea” from a rooftop looking over a lake palace. I watched cremations in a secular temple. I found a lake bed of abandoned sandals. I was blessed on the shores of a holy pond. I got mugged by a monkey. I lost sleep. I got stranded, and I discovered who I was. India is truly one of the last magical places left on earth.

For the last few days I’ve been having trouble concentrating at work because of the disaster in New Orleans. I really loved that city and I’m anxious that it may never be the same again. A lot of my unease has come from the complete news blackout of anything useful outside of eye witness speculation. Is my neighborhood affected? What part of town has been destroyed? To help put these questions at ease I Photoshop’d together the FEMA Imagery Derived Assessment of the flood damage and some screen shots of google maps. I hope I’m not violating any copyright here..

This is my old neighborhood. Spared.

UPDATE 1: There’s another map at www.digitalglobe.com. Download it here . It’s pretty close to the one I made above but is excluding any flooding in the west part of the city (Metairie and Kenner). I’m not which is more accurate.

UPDATE 2: This is a pretty good resource for finding out the damage in certain areas: http://www.scipionus.com/

UPDATE 3: Thanks to Tom for pointing out this site:

http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/katrina/KATRINA0000.HTM It allows you click on an area and see a relatively up to date satellite image.

UPDATE 4: A map is available with water depths: cctechnol.com
