What’s odd is how nervous and timid China is about just going in and taking the place over and putting in their preferred puppet regime. I’m sure everyone else, US and Japan included (with a few ritual, insincere complaints from South Korea) would be relieved and pleased. That the Chinese seem to fear they couldn’t pull it off is very strange. Such a big, booming, prosperous, and well armed country. Something here I don’t understand.

I read Kaplan’s Imperial Grunts a few months back. Very good indeed. Check out http://www.cominganarchy.com for some analysis of current events by some folks who share a common bond as Kaplan’s fans and foreign policy / world history buffs

if there’s an opposite to being imperialistic…the chinese are it. That’s just the way they are and have been for a long long time. Some would add that they’re xenophobes.
