New Orleans flood damage map |
|
For the last few days I’ve been having trouble concentrating at work because of the disaster in New Orleans. I really loved that city and I’m anxious that it may never be the same again. A lot of my unease has come from the complete news blackout of anything useful outside of eye witness speculation. Is my neighborhood affected? What part of town has been destroyed? To help put these questions at ease I Photoshop’d together the FEMA Imagery Derived Assessment of the flood damage and some screen shots of google maps. I hope I’m not violating any copyright here.. This is my old neighborhood. Spared. UPDATE 1: There’s another map at www.digitalglobe.com. Download it here . It’s pretty close to the one I made above but is excluding any flooding in the west part of the city (Metairie and Kenner). I’m not which is more accurate. UPDATE 2: This is a pretty good resource for finding out the damage in certain areas: http://www.scipionus.com/ UPDATE 3: Thanks to Tom for pointing out this site: UPDATE 4: A map is available with water depths: cctechnol.com |

Here’s the FEMA maps that I used:

The one you’re probably looking for is here:

Unfortunately it looks like most of the east of Orleans Parish got flooded.

Hello, How can I get a flood map for New Orleans East?Do you know anything about Haynes Blvd and Vanderkloot Ave.? My mom had too many animals to leave. She tried to rent a truck but no rentals anywhere.

Thanks so much for this information. I was just like you, constantly distracted from my work wondering about old friends there. My brother lived on Old Algiers Point and we made some wonderful friends there. I wasn’t able to find anything out about the flooding and that area. Thanks so much again.

These satellite photos are pretty good for seeing the exact damage:

The maps at Digital Globe are a few days out of date. I believe the water has been getting deeper and more shallow, depending on the tide.
It would be great if Digital Globe could post an updated map. I’m trying to send them an email to request it at info@digitalglobe.com.

Compare: http://www.digitalglobe.com/images/katrina/new_orleans_pshsuperdome_aug31_05_dg.jpg with your map around Superdome, isn’t there more water?

If you can help I’d appreciate it. I have two friends holed up in Colfax who live in River Ridge. From the map I pulled from Yahoo, it looks to me as if they are on the edge of the flooding and might have been spared (if the house is still standing after the storm). Is there any way you can use your photoshop to get me a closer, more isolated picture of that area? Their house is off Earhart Expy and David Drive.

Alex,
Thanks I have been trying to get access to these types of products. There is no excuse for not having them!! Please, any others that you can generate are most appreciated. We are trying to get imagery of uptown to determine structural damage. Have you found that detail anywhere?
Again, thanks! Information is such a precious commodity

Thanks so much for your information. I have been watching the news, but they never mention the west side of new Orleans. Can you tell me anything about Algiers? I don’t leave in Old Algiers Point, but I leave in New Algiers it’s more inland off of Berhman Highway. Any information would be helpful. Thank you and God Bless!

I’ll try to put up some more maps this weekend. They’re based on the FEMA data, not on satellite photos. I’m not sure what the best source is though. I haven’t found any information on actual structural damage, or even how deep the flooding is before FEMA decides to label it.
The areas west of New Orleans aren’t being mapped by FEMA as far as I can see. Either that or there wasn’t flooding in those areas, which is unlikely. It seems that the FEMA maps are less than accurate and the satellite photos are very difficult to get useful data from. There?s no water depth information, and they vary greatly on the tides. I think we have to treat the map above as a close estimate, as its the best data I?ve found.

Thank you so much! Truly, you made my day. I live on Nashville, between Claiborne and Fountainbleau, just north of Rocheblave. I must admit I also feel a bit guilty knowing so many others have lost everything. I am sure there is a way I will be able to give back. Perhaps knowing my home is ok will allow me to focus more on the needs of others.
Blessings to you!

There wasn’t too much flooding west of Jefferson Parish in any densely populated areas. Of course, a lot of area by the lake in St. Charles Parish and the like took in water, but it’s mostly swamp anyways, so not many people were affected by it.
There’s been a lot of reports of looting uptown, in the unflooded areas, which is depressing. I’m not sure how far west the looting has gotten.
September 2nd, 2005 @ 4:41 pm
My cousin and her family live on David Drive and from what we understand there was no flooding and their house sustained only minimal damage. Let’s hope they don’t lose it now to looting. Thanks for the map, I am sure it will be very helpful to many people.

the NOAA sat map showing streets west of 17th st. canal as being dry is correct.
I saw it on CNN with this disclaimer:
FYI if you see the actual NOAA sat images, the top of the photo is actually East…the bottom is west!
So cock your head to the left to view NOAA shots correctly, as the left edge of it is North.

thanks!

our old apartments on broadway have a few feet of water in them. most of tulane has some water but not much real heavy damage–> emergency.tulane.edu
my folks house in lacombe was spared, or at least everything above 10 ft was. katie’s family is at our house in houston as of last night.
i would think that uptown is being looted too, though not getting as much coverage because it’s harder to get to perhaps. sat image looks like NO east is a complete loss, they’re the lowest I think.

Alex,
Thank you for your time and effort to answer some of the many questions from those who evacuated. Can you help me with a question of clarity? Your map which I read representing conditions on 9/01 does not show the water crossing Claiborne near Napolean; yet the FEMA-1603-DR map showing 09/01 conditions does?
Again thank you for your efforts.

This message is in response to Beverly Wilkinson. I also have two friends holed up in Colfax that live in the area you described. Chances are great that they are mutual friends. If their initials are L.C. and P.B. and they live on Steamboat Circle, please let them know that, according to the map, they were spared from the flooding.

I have friends who live in Mandeville and I have been trying to contact them and get pictures of that area. Can anyone point me to an appropriate website? I would appreciate some help.

Reshandra, I have been working in the Carollton / Canal area for the last three weeks removing debris. We initially set up our campers (we’re staying there)near Michoud (by the NASA Facility). I’d estimate the damage in that area to be around 85 - 90% lost. The military is strictly enforcing a curfew in that area, but I have a contractor I.D. that allows me into the damaged areas. I will be returning to New Orleans on Jan 2nd and will be moving our work camp from Gretna back to the Michoud area (we are going to be reassigned to the Lower 9th). I don’t have any way to update anyone while there, but I should be back in Baton Rouge around mid January. I’ll try to get some digital pics and upload them if possible. If anyone wants me to, I can try to get specific photos of specific areas or addresses for you. In the 3 weeks prior to Christmas, I saw very few residents there. If anyone would like me to try to get some photos for them, please email me with the address and your contact info. I am not from New Orleans and I’m not very familiar with the area, so I really can’t answer many questions. But,I have a GPS in my work truck, so I should be able to find almost any address. My email address is DCComm@dccomm.net
