A couple of months ago, we had a discussion about the problem of apathy and the poor state of political participation in the US. I felt that a major cultural change would be the only way to reverse the problems in America’s political system. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, has started a new site called Campaigns Wikia which aims to make just this sort of cultural change.

The obvious limitation is that this community is only available on the Internet, leaving the majority of the US to the same mass media driven political process which we already have. I think it’s only a matter of time before these sorts of Internet communities take over and replace TV as a source of news and information. Just look at the influence of myspace.com. It’s the myspace generation that will be driving political change in the future, and they will be no strangers to Internet communities.
