Chinese New Year |
|
I spent the day wandering around central London taking in all the sites, sounds.. and smells of Chinese New Year. London apparently has the largest Chinese New Year celebration outside of China, so I was expecting it to be pretty good. However crowds overwhelmed the event. So much so that I spent most of the day staring at the back of peoples heads. I’m sure there was some culture in there somewhere though. A parade down Charing Cross Rd started the day. This was probably the best part, as everyone was enthusiastic, and most of the spectators hadn’t shown up yet. Next was Trafalgar Square, where the parade finished. After a long series of speeches from ambassadors, MP’s and the mayor, some dancing and music began. Unfortunately, by this point the crowd had reached capacity and I started to feel hungry and cold. As you may know, I’m not a happy camper when I get hungry. So I escaped to Harry Ramsden for some fish and chips. The grease satisfied me and I continued my trek through China Town and towards Leicester Square, where the fireworks were to be set off. The fireworks were pretty good. Lots of noise and smoke, always fun. After the fireworks, I met up with Cessi to have a drink and a snack. She then had to take off for home, but I headed to the Thames to watch the sun set and see the London Eye get lit with red lights (also part of the Chinese New Year events). Overall, a very eventful day, but like all London events, it was partially ruined by excessive crowding. Maybe I’m letting it get to me too much though. I blame the dark winter sinking into my psyche. |
